Norwegian giant Statkraft invests in Albania

Last updated: 10/02/2010 // The Norwegian based European leader in renewable Energy, Statkraft, has together with the Austrian based leading utility company EVN signed a concession agreement with the Albanian government in Tirana which awards them the right to develop a hydropower project on the Devoll river in Albania to the value of one billion euros.

The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation (NRK) writes that this project is currently one of the largest hydropower projects in Europe and will increase the total hydropower production in Albania with 20 percent.

“The signing marks a major milestone for the hydropower project in Devoll. It is entered into a licensing agreement for a project that will create jobs, contribute to economic growth and deliver clean energy to Albania. Statkraft is proud to be involved in this project. We have a very good partner in the EVN, and we have great confidence in a continued good cooperation with the Albanian authorities, says chief executive officer Bård Mikkelsen, Statkraft

The director for the Western Balkan section in the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Nils Ragnar Kams together with the Norwegian ambassador Sverre– Johan Kvale visited the Albanian Foreign Minister Ilir Meta last week. Among the political discussions, were the Norwegian investments in Albania. Kvale said that the Norwegian entrepreneurs had a great interest to invest in Albania, highly valuating the readiness and will of the Albanian government for cooperation. Meta said that the bilateral relations were very good in all fields laying the stress on the intensification of the ties in the economic sector. He emphasized that the necessary foundations for a very encouraging future focusing in the field of energy construction was now laid.
