Happy Birthday, Kosovo!

Last updated: 26/02/2010 // On February 17, 2008, Kosovo’s parliament unanimously endorsed its declaration of Independence. This makes The Republic of Kosovo the newest state in the world.

Two years later Kosovo’s streets are filled with a proud and hopeful crowd, ready for the celebration of their second year of independence. Cars, streets, roofs, walls are all covered with mostly three different flags: The Albanian, the American, and last but certainly not the least, the new Kosova flag.

Kosovo is now recognized by 65 countries, including 22 of 27 countries in the European Union. Norway was one of the first countries to recognize Kosovo only two days after the declaration.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Jonas Gahr Støre cited a need for clarity on Kosovo's status, so that it could develop both economically and politically. He also said it was important for the international community to stand as united as possible. "That would in itself contribute to clarity and stability", he said in a statement released by the Foreign Ministry.

Kosovo still faces economical, political and social challenges. However the international community with its presence is contributing with improving the situation. In 2009, Kosovo also secured membership of the International Monetary Fund and the World Bank.

The overall objective of the Norwegian assistance to Kosovo targets primarily key reform and development processes, and increasingly focuses on democracy – building measures, long term capacity- and institution- building and private sector development.

With hopes of a better future for this new state;

Urime Pavarësia, congratulations!
